Greetings

Since the second temple in Jerusalem was destroyed we did not have an institution to go in order to approach G-d. Rabbis of the time decided to build synagogues to allow people to say prayers. They wrote the version of the prayer book which is the Seder we use today. The midrish tells us that every place that a synagogue has been built, a stone from the holy temple is under that building. What can we find in a synagogue? We find G-d. To find G-d you say a few prayers from the prayer book. When you come with an issue or trouble, you find the rabbi with comforting words and some answers. You have the relationship with the other members which makes you connected to Jewish life. Jews come to synagogue to pray to G-d, be inspired and to maintain their identity.

HEBREW has three different terms that describe the function of a synagogue. As a Beit Tefillah, a synagogue is a place for prayer, the location for Jews to connect with G-d within a community, where we have the opportunity to join with others in our spiritual quest. At Sayville JCC We hold services throughout the year, so that Jews may gain the benefit of joining with the community to say Kaddish and to follow the prayer traditions of our heritage.

THE SYNAGOGUE is also Beit Knesset, a place for the Jewish community to gather. It is crucial, for the survival of our people, that we have a location where we can be together, to celebrate holidays and life cycle events, to plan for our future, to meet others who share our history and our values, and to bring our children together. Join us for Hanukkah parties and community meetings, Mitzvah parties, wedding receptions and youth group meetings. Our synagogue is the address for us as a people.

MOST IMPORTANTLY, the Synagogue is a Beit Midrash, a place to study our heritage. For over 3000 years our people have developed a wonderful, deeply spiritual way of life, with a literature full of wisdom and meaning. It is at and through the synagogue that we have the chance to share in that 3000 year old journey. At SJCC learning Judaism is not just for the young, though we have a program for youngsters from pre-school through 12th grade. Through adult education courses at the temple, explore the beauty of our traditions.

Our House of Worship

Sayville Jewish Community Center, built in 1960, exemplifies the religious devotion of a number of Jewish families who have been in this area for many years. The Community Center and Religious School facilities were built and supported by 35 families who recognized the need for a House of Worship and a Jewish education for their children.

The Sayville Jewish Community Center offers you and your family religious services conducted in the most inspiring and traditional manner.

Ours is a traditional synagogue. Young and old participate in our services which are conducted in Hebrew and English.

SPIRITUAL

Our Synagogue services bring inspiration and satisfaction to all members of the family.

Family services are held on Friday evenings followed by an Oneg Shabbat. We also have services on Saturday mornings, Saturday evenings, all holidays and festivals. Special Friday evening services are conducted by our children to supplement their religious education.

COMMUNITY SERVICES

The Center proudly conducts a program of community services for a number of worthy Jewish and other community causes. The Sayville Jewish Community Center affords its members an opportunity to fulfill their obligations as Jews and as members of their community.

PUBLICATIONS

The KOL SHALOM, our Center publication, is sent to every member. It features news, editorials and articles on timely topics of Jewish interest. The calendar summarizes the numerous Center activities for the coming month.

Looking into the Future

The Sayville Jewish Community Center experienced many growing pains during the early years of its existence, but continued to grow and expand its religious and educational facilities.

The many activities outlined in this website make the Sayville Jewish Community Center one of the leading congregations in Suffolk County. This is made possible by the untiring efforts, selfless devotion, and complete dedication of the men and women who make up our community. It is our aim to provide these activities for all our members and their children, and make the Center their spiritual home.

The community needs the Center and the Center needs the interest and support of the community. Let's work and pray together for a better today and a brighter tomorrow.
